Environmental gains of VIZ Steel acknowledged by awarding a gold medal in the All-Russian competition
As the leading global manufacturer of grain-oriented flat-rolled products, VIZ Steel (part of the NLMK Group) joined the list of winners of the All-Russian competition “100 best organizations of Russia. Ecology and Ecological Management” and was awarded a gold medal.
The company was given an additional award for achievements in the field of environmental protection in the prestigious competitive nomination “The Golden Branch of the Planet”. Stanislav Olkov, Executive Director, was awarded the Ecologist of 2017 badge of honor for the achievements in the field of environmental management.
The company’s Laboratory of Production and Environmental Сontrol became the prize winner in the category “Best Ecological Service”.
The awarding ceremony took place in St. Petersburg within the eleventh All-Russian Conference “Ecology and Production. Prospects for Developing Economic Instruments for Environmental Protection.” The Annual Environmental Forum is held with support of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, specialized committees of the Federation Council and the State Duma of the Russian Federation.
Since 2008 VIZ Steel has repeatedly become the prize winner in various categories of this prestigious competition. This year the work of the company in the field of sustainable industrial waste management was highly praised.
On the environmental performance in 2016.
VIZ Steel has invested over 164 million rubles in performing a set of ecological activities with regard to further minimizing the environmental impact of the production process.
The enterprise has reduced industrial waste generation by 90% and ended industrial solid waste removal – magniferous sludge which is generated in course of grain-oriented steel production.
Treatment plant revamping completion in 2015 made it possible to improve the quality of storm water treatment by 20% and to reduce the level of storm water discharge by 5% through its reuse in the closed water circuits.
The results of the systematic monitoring held by the accredited Laboratory of Environmental Monitoring for Production Facilities confirmed the minor environmental impact of the manufacturing process. According to the results of the previous year, the volume of waste water discharge was 45% below the permitted limits, the volume of emissions – by 30%.
