VIZ-Steel improves workplace safety
VIZ-Steel (member of NLMK Group) has started teaching its employees the rules of working in the LOTO safety system, which provides for the mechanical blocking of all possible energy sources and allows minimizing risks when performing equipment maintenance operations.
The educational project, which involves 100% of mid-level managers from the repair and energy departments, is part of the new programme aimed at the improvement of industrial safety. It provides for the implementation of the LOTO system at all potentially hazardous production sites.
"In 2017, we implemented a pilot project to introduce LOTO in gas-production and high-voltage equipment maintenance divisions. Starting this year, we will replicate the practical experience gained over three years of physical protection of employees from risks when working with equipment in other production units," said Vyacheslav Safronov, acting head of the OHS Department at VIZ-Steel.
After the training, employees of the enterprise will undergo screening, equipment will undergo inventory-taking, and all dangerous energy types will be identified followed by the analysis of ways to block the sources. Then the necessary types of locking devices will be determined and LOTO charts developed in the form of visual step-by-step instructions for the safe locking of mechanisms.
The company will purchase the equipment required for the implementation of the programme – various types of disabling mechanisms, locks, information tags, blocking stations, etc.
In 2020, the plan is to start implementing a programme of blocking energy sources in the repair areas of the cold rolling shop. Within five years, the project will be deployed in all production divisions of the company.
